France Skeptical About Un 'freeze' For Syria - Yahoo News

View photo A webpage general view taken on March 3, 2015 shows the citadel (background) in the northern Syrian more.. city of Aleppo, where dozens were killed on March 4 when rebels set off a powerful tunnel explosion targeting an intelligence headquarters (AFP Photo/Zein al-Rifai) United Nations (United States) (AFP) - France cast doubt Tuesday on whether a UN plan to freeze fighting in the Syrian city of Aleppo will materialize, and blamed the Damascus regime for the setback. French Ambassador Francois Delattre, who chairs the United Nations Security Council this month, said UN peace envoy Staffan de Mistura still has the full support http://genageru.edublogs.org of the 15-member council despite his unsuccessful efforts. "France remains skeptical about the regime's willingness" to support the UN plan for Aleppo, the envoy told a news conference. De Mistura in October unveiled the proposal to suspend fighting in Aleppo to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and make a first step toward a broader political deal. Syrian rebel forces in Aleppo have rejected the plan and have called instead for a comprehensive proposal to end the nearly four-year war that has killed 210,000 people. But Delattre said the fault for the failure of the Aleppo plan lies with President Bashar al-Assad, who he said had laid down unacceptable conditions. "Bashar al-Assad is proposing truces while stepping up bomb attacks," said the ambassador. Once Syria's commercial hub, Aleppo has been devastated by fighting that began in mid-2012, and the city is now split between loyalist forces and rebels.

France's Orange Posts Steep Earnings Drop But 'hits Targets' - Yahoo News

View photo Orange posts a near 50% drop in earnings to 1.22 bn euros in a crowded market (AFP Photo/Fabrice Coffrini) Paris (AFP) - France's telecoms giant Orange posted a nearly 50 percent drop in 2014 earnings to 1.22 billion euros ($1.38 billion) from a year earlier in a crowded market. The decrease in net income was "principally due to the impact of specific items unrelated to operating performance," Orange said in a statement. Financial director Ramon Fernandez pointed to "exceptional costs stemming not from weaker operational performance but accounting for litigation and a forward-looking adaptation strategy." Fernandez said the group invested 5.6 billion euros in 2014, or 14.3 percent of its turnover, compared with 13.7 percent in 2013. "For the whole of the year, revenues were 39.4 billion euros, down 2.5 percent" on a comparable basis, he said in a conference call with reporters, adding that the group had "reached all its targets". The former state-owned monopoly reined in its debt from 30.7 billion euros to 26 billion euros, Fernandez noted. "High-speed broadband is a growth engine in Europe" as well as an opportunity to recapture market share, he said, adding that Orange aimed to position itself as a leader in high-speed broadband and quality of service. At the end of the year Orange counted 3.7 million home page 4G subscribers in France, and passed the four million mark early this month. In Spain, Orange will spend 3.4 billion euros to acquire telecom operator Jazztel, while in Britain the group will gain 4.6 billion euros from the sale of EE, a British mobile phone brand operated jointly by Orange and Deutsche Telekom of Germany, to BT.
